New layout in Chemistry Problems page

The Chemistry Problems page has changed to reflect some of the feedback from the network kickoff event.  There is a forum where you can discuss issues or gain advice regarding your PhD work.  Literature-based problems are now presented with a graphical outline and there is a Problem of the Month that is intended to be more of an in-depth challenge.

Let us know what  you think.

7th April 2008.    New problems added to problem page.

Welcome

Welcome to the EPSRC-Pharma Synthesis Network website.

The Network is a unique collaboration bringing together the relevant government sponsored scientific funding agency, the EPSRC, and the three largest UK-based Pharmaceutical Research companies, AstraZeneca, Glaxo SmithKline and Pfizer.  The main objective is to maintain and strengthen support for synthetic organic chemistry research, which underpins R&D in the pharmaceutical industry.

The focus of the programme is the sponsorship and support of PhD studentships.  The studentships are jointly funded by the EPSRC and the collaborating companies and are awarded on the basis of competitive review of proposals submitted by academics from UK universities.  Initially the programme is being run as a 2-year pilot.  The first 15 studentships started in October 2007 and a further 15 due have been announced and are due to commence in October 2008.

Through this new way of funding research at graduate level we hope to create a model whereby industry and research councils collaborate to fund areas of research that are vital to the UK economy, in a way that provides students with excellent training opportunities and enables UK academia to produce world-class research.

First EPSRC Pharma Synthesis Meeting - Monday, December 03, 2007

The first meeting of the EPSRC Pharma Synthesis Network took place on 27th - 28th November at Scarman House, University of Warwick.  The meeting was sponsored by the linked industrial companies and provided the first opportunity for all the students, academic supervisors and industrial contacts to meet.  The meeting formalised the formation of a new UK-wide synthetic chemistry community.  Members of the Network are committed to sharing expertise and training opportunities with the aim of strengthening the discipline within the UK.  The meeting began with the students presenting posters on their research projects, which provided an opportunity for a lively exchange of scientific ideas and a good chance for people to interact.  The remainder of the meeting was largely devoted to discussions about how the members of the group would interact and in particular how the web site would operate as the focal point of activities.  There was enthusiastic support for the project and delegates left with a determination to keep up the momentum that was set by the meeting.
